Communication between the Nucleus.io edge server and the cloud is via a secure, fast outbound HTTPS connection – no need to open up firewall ports. Choose to spin-up a VM or we can provide the hardware. If your imaging systems can communicate via DICOMweb, many if not all of your workflows can be accomplished without an edge server via direct connection to Nucleus.io.

Microsoft Azure

 

Microsoft Azure and Azure Blob Storage allow the application to scale automatically or on demand. The environment consists of load balancers and High Availability Group of redundant web servers and database servers located in Azure, and all data is backed up daily and stored in a different datacenter.

Client-side vs. Server-side Rendering

 

One thing we have learned moving over one million exams per year in the cloud; bandwidth keeps increasing, but latency does not proportionally decrease and it varies too much. Latency is not going to get better either because it is bound by the laws of physics – the speed of light. This is exactly why server-side rendering cannot work in the cloud and what led us to invent client-side rendering in a web browser.

Nucleus.io is a complete diagnostic workstation in javascript. Image decompression and processing is all done in javascript without needing any plugins. Not only does client-side rendering deliver the performance required by clinical users, it also reduces the cost of the system significantly as it shifts resource utilization from the server to the client. Client-side rendering is great but requires high bandwidth connections… unless you deliver the pixel data in an intelligent way (Hint: Nucleus.io patented streaming tech).

Patented Streaming Technology

 

To solve the bandwidth challenge, we invented an image streaming technology to deliver image data in a progressive manner to the client. With Nucleus.io, you never send more data than is required for the size of display you need. And the technology automatically optimizes use of network bandwidth to deliver the necessary level of detail to the user.

We designed the streaming technology specifically to meet the demands of our time sensitive teleradiology practice. This kind of technology is the only way to meet the demanding performance requirements of clinical users over the internet. Server-side rendering cannot deliver this same kind of performance.
